Isaac Motte & Company receipt book, 1768-1815, (bulk 1768-1773).

Volume contains receipts for items and services paid for by Isaac Motte & Company, a letter, and biographical and genealogical information. Receipts are signed by Edmund Petrie, Thomas Walter, John Huger, Thomas Smith, Roger Smith, William Gibbes, and others; and reflect purchases of tea, coffee, bar iron, sugar, coal, a riding chair, and rice. Additional receipts refer to transfers of money, making a suit of clothes for the company's "Negro fellow named Sampson," and lacquering coffins. The collection also contains a letter (1815) to Colonel Morris from Grimke & McCormick concerning legal matters related to his account. Folder also includes biographical and genealogical information about the Motte family.

Thomas Walter (ca. 1740-1788) was an early figure in American botany. Born in Hampshire, England, he immigrated to South Carolina in the 1760s and acquired a plantation on the Santee River in South Carolina, where he prepared his Flora Caroliniana, published in 1788. This publication used the Linnaeus' system of classification. He also had a herbarium which contained all of the specimens described in his book.
